An important conference lias been held at Ratana. From what can be gathered R a tana line been having a strenuous time lately owing to certain factions pulling in various directions, and it is with a view to consolidating these that the conference is being held. Owing to the recent continuous rains work has for some time past been at a standstill in the tunnel which is being driven through the cliff in order to divert the Waiktao river so' that the foundations may be laid on the site of the Arapuni dam. Practically no work on this important part of the Arapuni scheme has been done since Faster, on account of successive floods, and until the present river bed is drained the real work of building the dam wall cannot bo undertaken. An Auckland* flat-dweller assaulted his neighbour because he was annoyed by the sound of a piano and of two mandolins which, he said, played only two _ tunes during the whole evening. While the mandolins were only visiting, the piano was a fixture, and it annoyed this' man who had to go to work at 4 a.m. Once he secured a kerosene tin and threatened to heat it all night if his neighbour played the piano.
