It is understood that a compromise has been reached in regard, to the coal rates detailed in the new railway tariff circulated during the past few weeks. The rate on native coal is to be increased by Is per ton for a distance np to 75 miles, and from 75 miles on up to 200 miles it is to be increased in graduating stages of one penny- per ton, with a maximum increase of 2s per ton. The dispute between the waterside workers and the employers at Wanganui was settled yesterday so far as working coastal steamers is concerned, this being the result of a conference between the parties yesterday morning. The men still refuse to work on overseas stepmers. The Arbitration Court at Dunedin yesterday refused to make an award applied for by the union to cover the conditions of employment of farm labourers in Otago. The judge described the application as a farce. Previously the court had declined to make an award, as the conditions of work varied in different districts, and it seemed almost impossible to regulate the work in all these districts. Nothing had occurred, b e said, to caus e the court to alter its mind on the matter. On charges of drunkenness- three cases were heard before Mr J. G. Oshome, J.P., this morning at the Hawera Magistrate’s Court. All were first offenders. Two defendants were convicted and discharged, and the third was convicted, fined the amount of his hail, and ordered to pay the cab hire. On a charge, of attempting to pass a valueless cheque for £2O to Messrs Purser and Suisted, Walter Kendall was remanded to appear before the magistrate on Thursday, August 6.
