DIVORCE REFUSED.

CUR TOUS CIR CUMSTA NCES.

GIFT OF £SOO

BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. (Received July 31, 1.24 p.m.) LONDON, July 30. Justice Merrivale refused to grant Gifford, an estate agent, a divorce under curious circumstances. The evidence showed that Mrs bit ford had a fortune of £BO,OOO, of which £20,000 was placed as a marriage settlement in 1920. The marriage had been unhappy, and there were several petitions and cross-petitions' for sepalafcion and divorce before Gilford s wife s misconduct with. Freeman, the corespondent. Freeman then wrote a letter agreeing to give the husband £SOO upon an undertaking that there would be no unnecessary exposure of Mrs Gifford’s past in the public court. Gifford’s solicitors discovered that the money hadl been paid and informed the judge, who gave judgment that the agreement savourd of corruption and was collusive. —A. and N.Z. Assn.
