A mesasge from Lawrence, Massachusetts, states that a general ten per cent, reduction, effective from July 27, was posted in the mills of four large New England woollen companies. Between twenty thousand and forty thousand operatives are affected. LONDON, July 17. The discovery of a new local anaesthetic-, possessing all the virtues of cocaine and none of its perils, was announced at the annual meeting of the British Medical Association at Bath, at which the Dominions, India, Ceylon and Hongkong are represented. It was discovered by Dr. Copeland, of Cambridge, who was awarded a memorial scholarship valued at £2OO. LONDON, July 18. Following a long conference of the textile unions at Bradford, it was announced that all operatives would cease work on the 2otli inst. unless in the meantime there was some move by the employers. Over a quarter of a million workers are affected. PARIS, July IS. The Brussels correspondent of Le Temps reports that the Belgian Government, in agreement with the British and French Governments, has decided that Dusseldorf, Duisberg, and Iluhrort will be evacuated in the near future. NEW YORK, July 17. The Radio Corporation of America announces that it has arranged with the British Broadcasting Company for the exchange of programmes of international interest during the coining winter several times weekly, perhaps nightly, a hundredfold more powerful than the present short wave lengths. Overseas visitors to London were en_ tertained royally yesterday, beginning with a garden party at Hampton Court Pailace, at which -they were the guests of the Government. Throe thousand assembled, not all of them from overseas, hut each having some interest in Empire affairs. Mr. J,. C. Ainerv s reception lasted for nearly two hours. The scene in the lovely gardens, under almost tropical sunshine, was brilliant and a veritable pageant of Empire. The Duke and Duchess of Wellington held an at home to overseas visitors at the famous Apsley House. The Duke and Duchess of York’s party in the evening was most successful, the line old staterooms of St. James’ Palace forming a splendid setting.
