STRATFORD COUNTY COUNCIL.
MONTHLY MEET! NO. At the monthly meeting at' the Strat_ ford County Council on Saturday, there were present: Councillors E. Walter (chairman!, S- Pitt, J. Jacobsen. W. H. Were, ,J. T. lie Ichor, T. 11. Anderson, J. O’Nei'il, ,S. Parker, and ,M Davis. The engineer (Mr. J. V\ . Spence) r«ported inter alia : South Hiding.—The scarifying, jomidjng up and rolling of the Waihapa Hoad between tiio Hobinson Hoad and the old crusher site has been completed. Gentyal maintenance work has been done on the Skinner, Bird, Eiimertv. Climie Cm and Puketiga.hu Hoads, and fern cutting and metal patching on the Wingrove lioad.
West Hiding. —General repair work has been don© on the following roads: Poto. Hastings, Ronald, Climie, Opunake No. 2, Brecon, Brooks, Palmer, Dutliie and .Rowan. Water-tabling and metal banking have been carried out on Opunnke No. 1 Bond. The ditch on the JVlamim Hoad has been cut for about six chains below the wldius line gate. This will carry off the surface water and give the road formation a chance to dry.
Maugaehu Hiding.—The metal obtained from Mr. Young’s pit has been crushed and with the exception of 35 yards, which has been dumped at the crushing site, has been placed on the Ptmiwhnkau Hoad, 372! cubic yards being put through the crusher. Sixtyfive chains of the road now remain to link up the metal. When this work is done the whole of the 5} miles included in the loan work will lie completed. The shell rock obtained from the slip near Messrs. Smith Bros.’ property lias been crushed and carted out. The metal from MesSjfs. Arkwright and Johnston’s property ds being crushed and distributed on the Maugaehu and Mangaotuku Hoads, , CONFERENCE ON HIGHWAY. Mr. T. M. Ball, Public Works engineer, advised, that the Main Highways Board proposed, in order to give mein_ hers of the executive of district Highway councils an opportunity of discussing matters in general meeting with the board, to hold a conference of executives in Wellington at a date, which would as nearly as possible coincide with the consideration of the Main Highway Estimates with the PublicWorks Engineers. The board also proposed to discuss with the executives tiie question of amendments to the -Main Highways Act. The council was asked to bring any matters jt wished to discuss under the notice of the executive for the district. —Beceived. CLASSIFICATION OF HIGHWAYS.
Mr. T. M Ball, .Public Works engineer, advised that provision was made, m clause V of the regulations issued under xne Public Works Amendment Act, 1924, for the classification of highways. in the absence of any classification, any particular highway could be used by any motor-lorry of a weight not exceeding ten tons, 'there would, of course b© a number of highways on which local authorities would wish to limit, either permanently or temporarily, the weight of the load which it was permissible to carry*. If the classification was to be of a permanent nature, tli© proceedure set out ill section 7 should be complied with. In the event of a classification of a temporary nature, such as the closing of roads against a certain class of traffic during winter months only, the local authority should operate under section 9 of the regulations. He asked to be advised of the names of any highways which the council wished to have permanently classified, and the class i* l which they desired the roads to be classified, together with any remarks and recommendations He mentioned that uniformity should obtain as far a« possible throughout each highway district.
Tlie council spent the afternoon on the matter of classifying the roads within (he county and the particulars asked for bv Mr. Ball were furnished.
