In reference to an inquiry on the subject ipade to the Department, the reply was that it was a .matter for the Board, not the Department. A motion that applications by teachers for leave of absence to contest Parliamentary elections be refused was lest by six vote s to three. One member said that if a teacher wanted to enter public life he .should resign, while others held that it was highly undesirable to interfere with the ambitions of . school teachers. BIGAMY CHARGE ADMITTED. CHRISTCHURCH, July 15. John George Burgess, aged 58, a builder and Justice of the. Peace, pleaded guilty this' morning to a charge that at Christchurch om May 7, being married to Jessie Crosbie Kellahan at Ashburton in 1887, he did go through a form of marriage with Neyenia Martha Robertson, thereby committing bigamy. It was stated that the accused had been going under the name of Thomas recently. He was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. BREACH OF GAMING ACT. WELLINGTON, July 15. At the Magistrate’s Court to-day, Ah Ting was fined £25, or in default three months’ imprisonment, for assisting in the conduct of a common gaming house. Two other Chinamen were fined £2 for being found on the premises. A Chinaman who was heavily fined last week for running a pakapoo house gave evidence that Ah Ting had nothing whatever to do with pakapoo. The Magistrate, however, decided that a fine would be in order. WRIT FOR ALLEGED LIBEL. DANNEVIRKE, July 15. A writ has been filed in the Supreme Court at Wellington by E. Gihhard. a solicitor of Damievirke, acting on behalf of Alice Maud Ward, against the publisher and managing editor of the New Zealand Truth, Wellington, claiming £IO,OOO damages for alleged libel in respect to an article which appeared on February 2, 1924. reporting an action at the Dannevirke Magistrate’s Court, in which the plaintiff was one of the litigants. The*case is expected to be heard at the coming session of the Supreme Court at Wellington.
