ROOT-GROWING COMPETITIONS

SOUTH TARANAKI BOVS’ AND GIRLS’ AGRICULTURAL CLUBS.

JUDGES’ REPORT FOR SEASON 1924-1925.

Messrs A. J. Glassoii ami Rod bynio, the judges ox the crops, reported as follows: —As compared with previous years, the judging for 1925 disclosed a serious fating off in the number of plots, and the keen interest usually displayed was lacking in some or the school districts visited. The schools being closed for such a long period during summer probably had a disorganising effect, during that time the pupils bsinif deprived of the teachers liinuence, and where the local supervisor was not diligent in his duties the work done was, in most cases, very poor. In some school districts, however, interest has been well maintained and really (rood work done, and in thiy respect Toko and Rawhitiroa are deserving of special mention. The latter produced six pots of mangolds which averaged Ci2 tons Bcwt., and three plots of carrots averaging 42 tons 4cwt. per acre. Toko also produced nine good plots, which included the champion crop m the mangold competition. Altogether, 51 mangold plots and 34 plot> of carrots were presented to the* judges tor weighing, the mangolds averaging 57 tons and the carrots 40 tons llcwts. j>er acre. In general, the mangold plots were lighter than last year, but the carrot p'ots showed a decided improvement, ns will be seen by the averages given below. The roots, generally speaking, showed good quality, a it'd the almost total absence of disease in both crops was a pleasing feature of the season’s work.
