In a libel action wherein the alleged libc'i was copied by the defendant paper from another paper, the judge, in awarding damages, ruled that the fact that a report had been copied from another paper could be considered in mitigation of the damages. Some of the New Zealand footballers are slightly feeling the effects of the rough weather experienced by the Moeraki. but they expect to fully degain their land legs before Saturday’s match. A MISSING KETCH. (Received July 8, 12.15 p.m.) MELBOURNE, July 8. A marine inquiry into the supposed loss of the ketch Lialeeta has opened. The Lialeeta has not been heard of since the night of April 15, when she left Semaphore, after taking in stores. Wm. Clark, harbourmaster at Launceston, gave evidence that he inspected the Lialeeta at Launceston on February 6 last. He was of the opinion the ketch was well found and that the sails were not in a bad condition. Wm. Knight, the owner of the ketch, said he valued the vessel at about £4OOO. She was insured for £3OOO. The inquiry was adjourned. BROADCASTING PRESS MESSAGES BRISBANE, July 8. At the annual conference of the Australian Provincial Press Association, a committee was appointed to inquire into the practicality of erecting provincial press wireless broadcasting stations, also to advise on broadcasting copyright. Mr Shakespeare, secretary of the association, said he had been informed on the highest legal advice that there was no copyright in news, hut there was in news- form.
