One of the moist heroic accomplishments in the annals of engineering has c-ome to lght in the account of a diver who. working single-handed and in. almost complete darkness, saved Winchester cathedral in England bv renewing its foundations. The task consumed most of five and one-half ye’ars and was performed several feet below the surface, in sllimy soil and water. The building was foundering because it rested only on an eightfoot layer of wet peat. The diver removed this material in sections., substituting concrete which, he himself brought down and laid on a firm stratum of gravel, flint and chalk below the peat formation.
