BOROUGH COUNCIL
The monthly meeting of the Patea Borough Council was held on Monday evening last, the Mayor (Mr. t. S. Finlayson) presiding. Mr. J. M. Stuart, water boring contractor, of .Dunedin, notified that he would be in Patea on Tuesday evening, and would meet the council with reference to reporting on town water
supply. Permission was" granted to Mr. A\ . Honevfiekl; to put down a crossing at his residence in Egmont Street. Mr. F. Davi s upholsterer, of Eltliani, wrote" offering to carry out. the work of re-covering the seats in the Town Hall- —The matter was held over lor the present. The contractor for the removal of
pine trees in Scotland Street wrote asking for exteasion of time in which to complete his contract. —C'r. Jones thought the contractor should be required to finish his contract, as there had already been great delay over the matter. There should be no trouble in disposing of the wood, as there was always a demand for it in the town. He certainly did not think it would be anv hardship on the contractor to request him to exepdite completion of the contract, and would move: “That the contractor be requested to make every effort to complete the contract as early as possible.’’ —Seconded by the Mayor and carried. Mr. H. C. Vincent wrote offering to supply the council with good gravel.—lt was decided to notify Mr. Vincent that the council cannot see its way at present to accept his ot-
ter. The question of remuneration to the building inspector for any work performed outside that covered by agreement was, after discussion, left to the Mayor to fix up. C*r. Christensen said he noticed that some of the accounts presented that evening covered a period of three months, and he thought the council should insist upon all accounts being rendered monthly, even if only for a shilling.—lt was resolved that all persons having business with the council be notified to that effect. The Mayor stated that the rates were coming in fairly well and the overdraft wa s £459 as against £2OOO this time last year. It was resolved to support the scheme outlined by the Patea County Council for the distribution of heavy traffic fees. The following tenders for 'painting the library building were accepted: Outside woodwork and roof — McComisky Bros. (£26 10s); ceilings and walls of two bedrooms and passage —R. M. Willis (£l4 2s 6d). The tender of Mr. A. Carey was accepted for the erection of a corrugated fence across the frontage of the section adjoining the fire station, the price being £l4 2 S 6d. The electrical engineer reported that the whole of the transmission lines stood up well during the recent gales, the only} interruption being due to wile small pole being blown down. On making an inspection of the library building he had found the installations to be in very bad repair, and the whole building had been re-wired. The water simply liad been continuous. The Public Trustee, for tile estate of the late Mr. Cadman, notified the .'•ouncil that its lease of certain section K in the borough would fall in on August 7th next.—lt was resolved that before offering the land again for lease Ihe council visit the property.
