ELTHAM.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. The council of the Eltham Chamber of Commerce met last night. Those present were Messrs Bridger (president), T. Fountaine, G. Peebles, Gordon, W. Ricketts, J. S. Wilson, W. Young and the secretary (Mr S. Prosser). A letter was received from the New Plymouth Chamber of Commerce relative to the night train service between New Plymouth, and Wellington. The president said that he favoured the proposal being given a three months’ trial. He had traveiled by the special all-night train to Wellington in connection with the late Prime Minister’s funeral, and it was a great saving of time. He could not see, however, that it could be made to pay if it ran every night. Mr J. S. Wilson agreed that the train would lie a great convenience, but thought that such a proposition would not pay, and the Government could not be expected to favour an unpayable train service. The following motion, moved by Mr Fountaine and seconded by Mr Gordon, was carried: “That this chamber supports the suggestion to institute a eighth train service to Wellington for a trial period of three months, but suggests that a twice-weekly service he instituted.”

The Railway Traffic Manager wrote stating that the department could not see its way clear to erect a warning bell at the railway crossing in Bridge street. The matter will be dealt with in order of urgency. The nresident reported that he had interviewed the postmaster relative to the telephone exchange, parcels and mail delivery, and that everything possible would be done t-o meet the chamber’s wishes. Also, that he had attended to information concerning places of interest to tourists in and around Eltham, as asked for hv the Tourist Department.

The nightwatchman’s monthly report contained the names of 20 defaulters. It was decided to give attention to the painting of signboards _in the various parts of the district. The president and Mr -Ricketts were appointed to deal with the matter.
