SHUNTING ACCIDENTS.
PROPOSED INQUIRY
VIEWS OF A.S.R.S
(By Telegraph.—Special to The Star.)
WELLINGTON, June 30
Mr. J. M. Mack (general of the Amalgamated Society of Rlailway Servants) states, in reply to .a question; that his organisation would notUbe satisfied with an ordinary' departmental investigation into shunting accidents. The commission should not consist wholly of experts, who are shunters only by observation, and it should he open to the press, so that the public may realise the difficulties, responsibilities and- risks run by the shunters. The society should have an. opportunity of appointing representatives of the men themselves. Mr. Mack added that oh June 19, his society wrote to the Minister for -Railways asking that an independent tribunal be set up to go into the question of the cause of shunting accidents, and that the order for reference he sufficiently wide to embrace all aspects of shuntiiig work. It should sit-in the* main centres and .should obtain evidence from the men? actually engaged in shunting work. ' . ; /_,,
