CANADA’S PROPOSALS

FOR AUSTRALIAN PRODUCTS

A measure for the ratification of the Australian trade agreement was introduced in the House of Commons this morning bv Mr Robb, Minister for Trade, who- stated that the treaty .was not as wide as the Government had desired. The present proposals did not involve any increase in the Canadian' general tariff, which i s applicable to (Canada, but gives Australia special rates for certain imports. Lard, beeswax, eggs, cheese, raisins, dried currants. essential oils, fruit pulp, eucalyptus oil, tomatoes, and other vegetab’es canned are free; fresh meats and canned fruits, half cent per pound ; butter and honey, one cent; tallow, dried apples, other dried fruits, 10 per cent.; canned meats, 15 per cent.j pears, quinces, apricots, nectarines, 25 per cent: sugar for refining, 36 to 46/ eents per ewt, according to of polarization. AFRAID OF NEW ZEALAND.

A message from Victoria- states that the Hon. Mr E. D. Barrow, Minister for Agriculture, British .Columbia, lias wired a protest to Ottawa against the proposed reduction in the Canadian butter tariff provided in the Australian treaty. He stated that he feared that New Zealand would ask for similar concessions, which might lead to a serious toss of trade to the dairy industry in that province.—Reuter.
