DISTRESS ROCKET AT SEA. SEEN BY THE PROGRESS. (BY TELEGRAPH. PRESS ASSOCIATION.! NEW PLYMOUTH. June 17. The mystery surrounding the distress, signals reported in Cook Straits is heightened by the statement of the captain of the' steamer Progress, which arrived here to-night from Welington, that a rocket was observed in approximately the same locality at ten past twelve this morning. The rocket was seen distinctly to flash and fall, and it was observed bv both the master and mate, who have no doubt it was a distress rocket from some craft at sea. When the rocket was seen the position of the Progress was latitude 40-deg. 23Jmin. south and longitude 173cleg. 12-J-min. south, and the point of origin of the Tocket was hearing north-cast by east from the Progress, which is approximately south of Wanganui. The Progress cruised in the locality till seven o’clock this morning, but found no trace of a ship, and came on to Now Plymouth.
