SALE OF JOHN HALE’S CATTLE
PRICES -MUCH BELOW LAST YEAR
A marked contrast was shown as compared with last year at Air John Hale's annual sale of Jerseys, which was held yesterday: There were 17 heifers submitted, and these averaged 58 guineas, while the hulls. 20 in number, worked out at an average of 42 guineas. The contrast was best shown when it was noted that last year the female stock averaged 154 guineas and the bulls nearly 100 guineas. The best bid secured (110 guineas) was for a heifer. Holly Oak Bright Eyes, bv Holly Oak Comedy Chief, a son of Grannie’s Knight, out of Lady Spark, a daughter of Soumise Tom and Lady Lala. Mr F. Phillips, of Ocorohanga, was the buyer. Mr Phillips bought nine of the heifers and also the bull Holly Oak Preton an (Holly Oak Comedy Chief—Pretty Lass) for 80 guineas. " Another heifer. Holly Oak Pansy (Grannie’s Knight-—Dark Prime) also went to Air Phillips at 90 guineas. Some of the bulls sold well in comparison with the heifers. Mr J. R. McDonald, Levin, paid 102 guineas for Holly Oak Masterpiece (Grannie’s Knight—Lambert Countess), and Holly Oak Treasure King (Grannie’s Knight —Jersey Bank Treasure! went to Mr E. F. Hills. Kaeo. at 100 guineas. By agreement Air Hale was allowed and he placed a reserve of 150 guineas on the heifer Holly Oak Signorelln (Grannie’s Knight—-Signal’s Lioness!, and 500 guineas on the hull Holly Oak Superior Swan (The Cygnet—Lady Superior). Both failed to reach the reserve.
The sale was conducted by Afessrr Newton King. LtcL, and ‘AY’right.Stephenson and Co., in conjunction, the auctioneers being Messrs K. Kirk and J. C. Broad. Messrs Newton King. S. Shaw and C. E.
