RAIN AND G A,LE. HEAT WAVE! REGISTERED. BY CABLE-PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT, NEW YORK, May 23. The United States from the Mistsjssipi River -- to the Atlantic eo-aet sweltered under its first 1925 heat wave. Numerous prostrations ate reported, principally in the. middle west-, while two deaths occurred at Nebraska. The temperature reached 94 degrees at Washington, which is the hottest at this date for 56 syeare. The thermometer rose 28 degrees in twenty minutes and. 40 degrees in four minutes in Milwaukee. There were unusually heavy rainstorms 1 in Minnesota and North Dakota. The temperature was 87 degrees in New York, which is the hottest since 1902. A| curious phenomenon was observed at Rloehester, -New York, shortly after daylight. A heavy cloud obscured the sun, suddenly turning day into night, and simultaneously the waters of Lake Ontario reached forty to a hundred feet, later returning far above the ordinary water line. Terrific winds m'Mmnesota uprooted trees, overturned buildings and freight oars and wrecked communication facilities. Chicago and other localities report that all seasonal heat records were broken.
