Major the Hon. J. G. Coates, M.C., has been awarded the Colonial Auxiliary Forces’ officers! decoration. Mr H. L. Spratt was a passenger to .Wellington by mail train this morning on business matters.
Mr. H. Atmore, M.P. for Nelson, who has been on a. brief visit to Eiltham, returned south by to-day’s mail train. Brigadier Stone, of Wellington, who has been recently appointed to the oversight of tire immigrant boys arriving in New Zealand under the Salvation Army scheme, is visiting Tarar naki in connection with his work. He arrived in Filthaim last night and i K staying with his daughter, Mrs. Ira Bridger.
There passed away on Thursday last at noon, a very old resident of Hawera, •it the age of 88, in the person of Mm .7. E. Eeechev. She came to Hawera in Jn’v. 1882“ and had resided here ever since. She was one of the very earlv settlers of New Zealand, arriving at Lyttelton in the “Samararig” in 1852 with her parents, Mr and Airs Nelson, and a sister, who married Air Geo. Beechy. Her ear'y life was spent m Canterbury. Mrs Beechey’s husbajid pre-deceased her some years ago. There, are left to mourn their loss a family of four sons and a daughter. Mr J. W. Uoechey and Mrs S. A. Frver, ol Ha-w-era, are two of the family. Much Kympathv will be felt for them by their many friends.
