POLO.
FORTUNES OF NEW ZEALANDERS BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. SYDNEY,-May 21. The New Zealand polo players were to-day deleted from further play in the Australasian Cup contests owing to their -defeat in the beaten teams’ matches hv the Victorian red team. The Victorians scored eight- goals and New Zealand nil. The competition was not so one-sided as the scores would indicate, the visitors being’ several times unable to bap splendid efforts by getting the ball between the posts. The Victorians were always more confident, and by better 'combination invariably completed dashes to their opponents’ citadel. W. Mackenzie, n,t hack, was a "lower of strength to the New Zealanders, heading off invasions.. Lyons was responsible for frequent brilliant hursts. C. Mackenzie showed his usual consistency. Their opponents, however,' were too strong in all departments. The series of games in which they played indicate that the New Zealanders, both in quality, combination and horsing, are not equal to the standard of the best Australian teams.. The New South Wales red team beat' the blue team by 7 goals to 1, and South Australia bent Victoria by 7 to 4.
