POLITICAL SITUATION.
FRANKLIN BY-ELECTION. TWO CANDIDATES OPT. (by TELEGRAPH. muss ASSOCIATION.) AUCKLAND, May 21. The date of the Franklin by-election is still uncertain, as the registrar of electors has not yet received the writ. In the meantime the various parties are active. Only two candidates are in the field as yet, Mr McLennan, who is regarded as the Reform Party’s official representative, and the Rev. W. C. Wood, who is standing against allcomers. Mr McLennan’s supporters consider’ he will he welcomed as the candidate hv all parts of the district. Fifty representative men from Pukekohe and the neighbourhood met last night, and with one or two dissentients decided to give Air McLennan the fullest possible support. The final choice of the official Reform candidate will be made on Monday. The Liberal Party has made no announcement up to the present as to its intentions. The ultimate decision rests with Mr T. M. Wilford. the leader of the party, to whom a recommendation will be made in due course. The Labour Party has made no official announcement vet, and the final choice will lie made by the national executive of the party.
