HIGH COMMISSIONER’S CABLE. The Department of Agriculture lias received the following cablegram, dated I.6th inst.. from the High Commissioner for New Zealand, London : BUTTER, Market slow, and has a downward tendency. Official quotations are : New Zealand.—Finest salted, 168 s to 170 s per cwfc (Is 6d to Is 6Jd per lb); exceptional, 1.72 s per cwt (Is 6ld per lb) ; unsalted, 176 s to 180 s per cwt (Is 63d to Is 7id per lb) ; other qualities, 142 sto 164 s per cwt (Is 3id to Is old per lb). Australian. —Salted, 160 s to 162 s per cwt (Is 5d to Is SJd per lb); exceptional, ].64s per cwt (Is 6id per lb); other qualities, 140 s to 156 s tier cwt (Is 2d to Is 4.kl pei - lb) ; unsalted, 164 s to 168 s per cwt (Is old to Is 6d per lb) ; othe.r qualities, 150 s to 160 s per cwt (Is 4d to Is 5d per lb). Argentine.—ls6s up to 164 s per cwt (Is 4Jd to Is 5£ d per lb); other qualities, 152 s to 154 s per cwt (Is 5Jd to Is 5),d per lb). Irish.—Salted, 170 s per cwt (Is 6Jd per to); unsalted, 176 sto 178 s per cwt (Is 63d to Is 7d per lb). Siberian. —According to quality; 146 s to 150 s her cwt (Is 3.1 d to. Is 4d per lb). Danish .-—lßos to 182 s per-ewt (Is 7d to Is 7id per lb). CHEESE. Market very quiet, and 94S being, accepted for New Zealand to-day. Official quotations are:—. English, finest farmers’, stocks almost exhausted; 135 sto 140 s per cwt (Is 2)1 to Is 3d per lb.) New Zealand : Coloured and white, 94s to 95s per cwt (lOd per .to). Australian : .Finest and fine, coloured, according to size, 86s to 92s per cwt (9d to 93d per to). Finest white, 90s to 92s per cwt (9-id to 9-Jd per lb). Shipments of New Zealand produce arrived this week per s.s. Somerset, Port Denison and Hurnui. TALLOW.
Tallow.—Market steadier. Demand is good for spot and shipment. Present quotations are : Mutton—Fine, 45s 6d to 46s per cwt; fair to good, 44s to 45s 3d per cwt; dark to dull, 41s 6d to 42s 6cl per cwt. Beef —Sweet and (or) mixed, 44s 6d to 45s per cwt; fair to good. 42s 6cl to 44s 6d per cwt; dark to" dull, to 41s 6d per cwt. Mixed —Fair to good, 42,s 6d to 44s per cwt; dark to dull, 39s to 41s 6cl per cwt; gut. etc., 37s 6cl to 39s per ccvt.
WOOL. Sales closed on 14th instant, and (luring the last few days the demand improved considerably. Prices for merino hardened 5 per cent and crossbred 71 per cent on average above opening rates, highest point being touched at the close, and series ending with good undertone. More optimistic feeling apparent in Bradford with regard to the future. Average closing rates were : 60’s to 64’s (merino), Is 9d to 2s 2d per lb; 56’s (super halfbred), Is 7d to Is 10c! per ib; 44 to 46’s (medium crossbred), Is 2d to Is 6d per lb; 36 to 40’s (coarse crossbred). Is Id to Is 3d per lb. Original catalogue contained 135,000 bales, but offerings were reduced to 70,000, of which 43,000 were sold, 24,000 going to Continental, 18,000 to Home, and 1000 to American trade
