FOOD COMMISSION.
FATE OF RECOMMENDATIONS. LIKELY TO BE DROPPED. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. Received Mav 13, 9.40 a.m. LONDON. May 12. The Times’ political correspondent says that inquiries among Conservative members of the House of Commons confirm the belief that there is little likelihood of the recommendations of the Food Commission’s majority report being carried out. It is argued that evidence does not prove the existence of profiteering that would iustify the establishment of a statutory food council, and it is claimed that the first effect of such action would he to band the food merchants together in the defence of the common interests, with an inevitable reduction in competition which had gradually been reasserting itself since the absence of State control. The general belief is that the matter will quickly be allowed t.o drop.—Times.
