(From Our Own Correspondent.)

MASQUERADE BALL. The plain and fancy dress masquerade ball held here last Thursday, as was expected, turned out a most successful and enjoyable function, and as a result thereof the Hall Society’s funds will benefit to the extent of spme £2O. There was a very large attendance, about £26 being taken at the door, and the total receipts amounted to £3l 7s 6d. The prizes for the best fancy costupies were won by Mr Chong and Miss Ritter, and the waltzing competition by Mr and Mrs Hughes. The committee had worked hard to make the event the great success .it was, and the hall was most beautifully decorated with greenery, enlivened by flowers, whilst the front of the stage was so arranged as to appear just like the native bush, and the opinion of all is that never before has the hall looked better. Coloured shades over the lights enhanced the effect. The supper prepared by the ladies was a most sumptuous one, and remarks heard from several leaving the supper room were: “Some supper, eh,’’ and “Wasn’t she a stunner supper.’’ The very excellent music for the dancing was provided by Miss Cheffing’s orchestra of foup instruments (piano, corrfet, violin and drums) from Omniake, .and was highly spoken of by all present. The duties of M’s.C. were ably carried out by Messrs J. and A. Gibson, C. Slater, H. F. Johns and E. Hooper. GENERAL NOTES. The factory lias now ceased cheesemaking for the season and commenced separating, the turnover being effected last Monday. I understand that it will be working every other day in about a. week’s time, probably after the 20th. The past week has been very fine and sunny, with frosty nights. This (Monday) evening, however, a change seems imminent, as it is very overcast and a raw north-east wind is blowing. The Tennis Club Committee have taken advantage of the fine weather to get along with the levelling of the site for the court, and from appearances good work is being done.
