INFANTILE PARALYSIS.
CASES IN MELBOURNE. AVERAGE GREATLY EXCEEDED. BY CABLE —PRESS wnr'Cnn^-rfvpYBVTl MELBOURNE, May 12. The City Council discussed the prevalence of infantile paralysis in and about Melbourne. It was urged, in view of New Zealand’s experience, that they should prepare for an emergency; Dr. Hughes statedL.that the average number of cases in the children’s hospital previously did not exceed three, but this rear there had been 22, with five deaths. There were "at least two other deaths outside, and one doctor was caring for 11 cases. The council decided to form a standby organisation in the event of it being needed. 1 ’ • A conference of health officers is being held to discuss the position.
