HAWERA COUNTY COUNCIL

MONTH.LY MEETING. Further business was transacted at Saturday’s mooting of the Hawera County Council. TREE-PLANTING. Reference was made to the good work of the sub-committee appointed to carry out the plan of planting trees on waste sections and corners in the county. It was stated that the trees were ail doing remarkably well, and that the committee were to be complimented on their work. Cr. Walsh was appointed in place of Mr Linn, Cr. Larcom being the other member of the committee. MAIN* HIGHWAYS. In reference to the last meeting of the No. 7 Council, it was mentioned by the chairman that he had endeavoured to have Skeet Road made a main highway, hut it was not entertained by the council. TQNGAHOE BRIDGE. It was reported that the strengthening of the middle portions had been replaced with jarrali. and the sides had been done similarly.® and had blade a very satisfactory job. A tsrengthening cable against flood water had also been added. General appreciation has been expressed' at the completion- of the work. PAEROA ROAD. A deputation of settlers from the road, which is an off-shoot of the Ketemarae Road, waited on the council with a request that a portion of the mimetalled road be formed. Messrs Standi,sh ; Schmidt and Bol’aud spoke on behalf of the request. They asked for twenty chains to be completed, and said that nothing had been done for 30 years. • The chairman said that he would take a run down and inspect, and see what could he done. LYSAGHT ROAD. A recommendation was made that work as suggested, to the extent of £35, be completed for metalling the hill near Tidswell’s property. ROAD CORNERS. It was reported that gorse and other hedges were very had on many corners in the county and should have attention.. It was mentioned that notice to cut had been given in some cases and others would be taken in hand. TARERE ROAD. This road, which is away hack at the tpp end of the Merc-mere Road, was the subject of a request mr improvement. .Mention was made by one councillor | that he believed nothing was done since the bush was felled. Cr. Douglas said he believed it was under control of the Public Works, and that an amount had been put on the Estimates to do the work required.— It was decided to request the Department to give a grant for the road. ACCIDENT TO TEAM. Referring to the accident which happened recently to, one of the council!s horse teams, the foreman said that hundreds of loads had been tipped without, accident. The horse in the dray moved back before it was expected. If it had not been for the shaft all three horses would probably have escaped. * It was lucky, said the chairman, that the council did not lose all three horses.
