An action for alleged slander commenced at. the Supreme Court this morning, wherein May Gelison, aged 23, a single woman, is proceeding against Harry Ray, an ex-billiard saloon proprietor, claiming £IOOO damages for alleged slander. Counsel for the plaintiff, in opening the case, said that Ray was alleged to have stated that the plaintiff was unchaste and had submitted to the performance of an illegal operation involving another man in £2OO expenses for the operation and payment of the undertaker. The hearing is proceeding.

SENTENCES AT PALMERSTON . ' NORTH. PALMERSTON N., May S. At the ' Supreme Court the undermentioned prisoners were sentenced.:— Thomas Higgins alias John Patrick Higgins, and Ray Buckley, alias Molly Riltvj appeared on charges of receiving money and knowing it to have been stolen. The former was ordered to be detained at a certified inebriates home for two years, also to pay the costs of the prosecution the later whom the jury recommended for mercy, was admitted to nrobatidn on certain conditions. Robert Howden and Denholm Gillespie for theft from the person, were ordered reformative detention, Howden for one year and Gillespie for two years. De'ctetive Holmes said in evidence that Howden was a “spillei’’ and had a had record, , . , , Counsel fop Gillespie said that the family and until the last few years, family and unti the ast few years, had had borne an unbimished record. Douglas Gordon Hollis pleaded guilty in the lower corirt to the theft of a mail hag and contents, vaued at £l3O, handed to his honour a written statement and promised to go straight after any term of imprisonment inflicted. The judge said Tie could not grant probation as letters had .been destroyed. He was sentenced to twelve months’ reformative detention. A girl, aged seventeen, whose name was suppressed, for openig a postal packet, was admitted to probation.
