OBITUARY.

ADMIRAL STURDEE. Admiral Sir Frederick Charles Doveton Stufdee, whose death is reported to-day from London, was born on June 9, 1859. He entered the Navy in 1871, and served in the Egyptian war, 3882, being present at the bombardment of Alexandria. He was assistant to the director or naval ordnance 1893-97, assistant director of naval intelligence 1900-2. He became chief of staff of the Mediterranean fleet 1905-7, was rear-admiral of the first battle squadron 191.0, and commanded the second cruiser squadron 1912-13. Admiral Sturdee was chief of the war staff 3914-15, and it was while thus employed that Lord Fisher sent him to the Pacific to find and defeat Von Spec. The crushing defeat of the German squadron off the Falkland Islands followed on December 8, 1914. In the battle of Jutland, Admiral Sturdee was iri command of tho fourth battle squadron. He was ccin-mantler-in-chief at the Nore 1918-21. He was made admiral of the fleet 1921. He was knighted in 1913, and was created a baronet in 1916. In 1919 he received a grant of £IO.OOO for his services during the Great War.
