FOOTBALL.

WEDNESDAY COMPETITION. Ideal weather favoured the opening of the South Taranaki Wednesday Rugby competition. Four matches were "played in all, and it may be honestly said that the standard of play was distinctly better than that disp aved by the Wednesday .teams last year. Those who were present at the various 'matches- predict a very successful season for Wednesday football. Details of the games are as follow r CITY B v. FRASER ROAD.

City kicked off and launched a vigorous attack, but from a penalty Eraser Road found the line well down. City came again and a scramble in front of the goal ensued, hut City was penalised, again enabling Eraser Road to clear. ’ City was throwing the hall about well when Johnson picked up and transferred to Knot,man. who score about ten yards from the corner. B rumble failed to convert—Fraser Road 3, City 0. Fraser Road continued to attack until Millar found the line well down. Fraser Road was penalised for off-side play, lint Hart failed to goal from a good position. A good passing rush, in which nearly all the City backs handled the ball, saw tiie 5 leather come down to Thacker, but that player was smothered with the ball while attempting to cut in. Dan Whai, one of the Fraser Road backs, put in a good run and Newall picked up and scored. Nichol failed *o eon vert —Fraser Road 6, City 0. CITY A 12 v. WHAREROA 3

At the outset of the game at Whareroa, City attacked and the hall was carried well into Whareroa’s territory. There a serum was formed. The game ended shortly afterwards with the score: City 12, Whareroa 3. OHANGAI 8 V. NOR MAN BY 5. The game at Ohangai was even and open, the home team defeating Norinanby bv 8 points to 5. Early in the match Hunt scored for Ohangai* no goal resulting. Shortly after Lee scored for Ohangai, ancl the try was converted bv Hunt, making the score at half-time'Ohangai 8.- Norm an by nil. In the second spell Tali' scored for Normanbv. and a try was converted by Tonga O’Carroll. Normanby attacked strongly just boforo tho close of the game, but there was no addition to their score. The first of the series of Wednesday competitions was held on Wednesday in the Manaia Domain between Marinate and Tokaora, and resulted ih a win for the latter by three points,- the scores being Tokaora 15, Waimate 12. Taking the play of both teams, they were very good, and some of the individual players on both sides were of a hish order. For Tokaora, the following scored tries, of which none were converted: Floyd Williams, R. and B. 81-oor, John Fraser and N. Wren. For Waimate, tries were scored by Ruru Sam. G. Nnku and P. Luke, and a penalty goal w r as kicked by S. _Rei. Mr W. Badley very ably carried out the duties of referee.
