SPECTACULAR RUNAWAY.

BAKER’S HORSE AND CART

UNCHECKED GALLOP OF TWO MILES.

At about a quarter to twelve this forenoon the considerable number of people in the vicinity of the High street-Regent street junction, in Hawera, were given an unusual thrill, not unmixed with apprehension, by the eight of a runaway horse attached to a baker’s cart coming at a gallop towards High street. Collision with more than one motor car was narrowly, averted but, passing into High street,, the horse ran into tbe back of a spring dray driven by Mr Campbell, carrier. This brought him to a standstill, and. spectators quickly took charge. A cut on the nose was all the apparent damage to the horse, and no damage was done to either vehicle. Interest was intensified by a lad, riding bareback a cream pony, galloping in chase of the runaway. The facts elicited were that pile of Mr Clement’s employees delivering bread on the Manawapon road, about the inter, seetion o.f t-ho factory road, left the cart to serve a. customer, and the horse set off townward. 'The lad Vooght, on horseback, and a couple of cars quickly followed up, but the horse was a goodi one and, turning up Dive’s Avenue into Regent street, he avoided all obstacles, and was not headed till brought to a standstill, as described after a gallop of from two to two and a half miles.
