HELP FOR THE DISTRESSED.
MEAD FAMILY FUND. OVER £2OO SUBSCRIBED. ‘ “Pllea.se find on,closed one pound note for the Mead family. I desire to thank you for your prompt offer to collect for Hits family (although .1 per'scfcially do not know them) in their great and sad bereavement.” The above- note, to hand this morning from a Star reader at Pihama, is typical of. the ready response being made to the appeal on behalf of the Mead family,- ,sofferees .and losers in the recent KaLaramea, fire. Both i n the southern district itself and right up the coast the case has attracted sympathetic support and the totals of the several subscription lists are still mounting. -It was found impossible to get into touch with the treasurer of the Paten, fund this morning, but the latest figures from other districts are as follow: Kakarnmea £45 Alton ... £49 Manutahi ... ... £26 Star Office ... £29 Lanrensoh and Junes ... £57 Riverdale Factory £33
Tn addition to the money subscribed, welcome gifts of clothing were made from neighbouring settlers immediately following the fire, and a load of furniture has" also been sent to help to reestab'ish the home. Tt is proposed to close the Kakaramen. Alton and Manutahi lists this week; those issued by the Star will be kept open a few days longer.
