HAWERA’S NEW MAYOR.

DULY INSTALLED. COUNCILLORS SWORN IN. Without pomp and with very little ceremony Hawera’s new Mayor and councillors were duly installed last nigbt, all pledging themseves in the ratepayers’ service. Those present at the outset were the retiring Mayor (Mr L. A. Bone), the Mayor-elect (Mr E. A. Racey), and Messrs W. 0. Strange, W. Rage, H. N. Lester, E. Morrissey, J. M. Townsend, W. C. Gilbert, W. R. Roller and A. Reid. An apology* for absence was received from Mr H. B. Burdekin. Mr Bone congratulated Mr Racey and the other gentlemen present on their election to the council table. Proceeding, Mr Bone said that Mr Racey had been placed in a position of verygreat honour, and while he occupied the office of Mayor all he said ancl did would be watched with the closest interest by the citizens of Hawera. Mr Bone was sure that Mr Racey would uphold his position with honour and dignity. Continuing,. Mr Bone said lie had always contended that the public duties of those occupying the positions of mayor and councillors should take precedence over private business. If they did not do that they were far better out of it. The speaker advised councillors to give their best attention to detail committee work, as it was at the committee meetings that most of the business was done. In conclusion, Mr Bone once more congratulated Mr Pacev, and handed to him the keys of the Council Chambers. Mr Racey' said it was with, mixed feelings that he was there that night. Mr Bone had spoken very well and to the point, giving advice concerning the council’s duties, but Mr Racey pointed out that several of the new councillors had had council experience before. He had a pretty good inkling of what was required. Proceeding, Mr Pacev s*aid he had not come forward in any lighthearted way. He was there to try and Uphold the dignity of the position, and although he realised that he was following some very good, men, he would try to emulate their example, work in the best interests of t.he borough and in harmony with the councillors. f . Cr Morrissey moved that the copncil place on record its appreciation of, the 10 years ofsService as a councillor/ rendered to the borough by Mr J. yb Osborne. * • J?

Cr Townsend seconded. The Mayor said he regretted; that unwittingly he had removed good man Trom the council table, hut added that, should an opportunity present itself, he would be pleased to sed Mr Osborne again become a councillor. The motion was carried unanimouigJ>\ Cr Reid moved that the council place on record its'appreciation of the services of the ex-Mayor, Mr L. .A. Bone. . Cr Morrissey, in seconding, paid a tribute to Mr Bone’s fairness in .connection with all council matters. The Mayor agreed, stating that a better man to deal with than Mr Bone would not he found anywhere. Mr Bone had plenty of common sense. The motion was carried unanimously. COUNCIL COMMITTEES. r
