BRITAIN’S FOOD SUPPLIES.
CONTROLLING COUNCIL TO BE SET UP. MENACE OF GRQUP CONTROL RECOGNISED. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT LONDON, April ‘26. 1 It was -stated that the Food Co-ni-,mission's report, -the dii'aft of which -haw Iveen approved, definitely recommends the creation of a food council, ■chfairged with the duty of w'atching •prices, and investigtaing profits. The Daily Express says that the -chairman will be -a highly paid permanent official. The council will be able, lay influence amt publicity, to ■check -abuses, -and to prosecute when ■necessary. The commission expresses alarm- at the concent, ration of the meat import trade in the hands of a -strong group, hut no evidence was adduced that this power wavs used to the disci, dviarnttage of the public: on the contrary, group control often acted to purchaser’s benefit, but the very existence of siue.li power presents a.- possible menace. If -the menace -became active, the Ministry might have to consider entering into direct competition, but such an entry in the wheat trade was out of the question.
