THE HOLIDAYS.

IN SOUTH TARANAKI

HOW THEY WERE SPENT

Easter passed happily in South Taranaki, despite the fact that the weather experienced on Saturday was anything bnt pleasant. Easter Monday, howexei, broke gloriously fine, and continued so throughout the day, adequately compensatiiio- for the inclement conditions prevailing on Saturday. Nevertheless, taking the holiday period as a whole, ther was no cause for complaint. As was to 1)0 expected, the Hawera Trotting . Cluli’s two days’ meeting proved to ho the biggest Easter attraction in South Taranaki, visitors coming from all parts of New Zealand to participate in the good sport offering. Consequently the town was by no means dull. . „ , The spvon-n-side Rugby tournament at Kapono-a on Saturday drew a record attendance, 1300 spectators and approximately 140 players being present, hut unfortunately the heavy rain somewhat marred proceedings. The majority of the bowlers, had their time fully occupied by play in the South Taranaki tournament, while a few cricketers indulged in play at Hawera. In the world of athletics the West Coast Championships, held on the Egmont A. and P. Association’s show errounds. was an important fixture, and provided some good'individual performI ances. 1 As is nearly always the case, accomI modation at the Dawson Falls mounI tain house was taxed to its tuil I capacity, but owing to the unfavourable weather practically no mountain climbing was undertaken during the early nart of the holiday. On Sunday anci” Monday, however, conditions were very favourable and several made the ascent over the heavy fall of snow which occurred recently. Taking it all round, there has been no lack of holiday att’-actions in South Taranaki, ami it is pleasing to nofp that the oolpe report that no oases of law-breaking have necessitated their attention during the period.
