TR ANSPARENT CLOTHING
GERA!AN CARDINAL’S BAN
BERLIN, Feb. 3
Women who wear low-neck gowns must not be married in any churches within, the jurisdiction of Cardinal Bertram, Archbishop of Breslau. This is part of the proclamation contained in a pastoral letter addressed by the Cardinal to Roman Catholic clergymen, and is characterised as the. most drastic pronouncement on women’s clothes issued here by a churchman. For the first time complete regulations as to how women must be clad are contained in the pastoral letter, which says : . “The upper part of a woman’s body up fx> the neck, and the lower part of the knee as well as the arms to the elbow, must lie completely covered. Transparent clothing must not bo regarded as covering the body.” r The Cardinal’s ukase is the climax of his long war on single-piece bathing suits, low-neck 'and bare-back gowns, and paint and powder habits, which the German women have largely adopted. His letter entitled; “Disrespect for Christian decency; endangered through propaganda foi; pagan naked culture and through obc scenities in bathing resorts and other places.” The letter begins: “In futfends common decency are" to .he exure female persons whose clothing of-, pelled from Church Communion.' as, well as other sacraments' and church functions. Among other sacraments this inchides church weddings.”
