NOTES AND COMMENTS. (By Maecenas;. The sport of trotting is much more pouplar with the general public of the South Island than that of galloping, and throughout the length of the South the light harness sport flourishes. In fact a large majority cl racing clubs are forced to put trotting events on „their programmes to make their meetings successful. 11 we except Auckland, and in a lesser degree Hawera, one is justified in that trotting is not popular in the North Island. Possibly a want of knowledge of the sport- and the lack of good class horses are factors that tell against the trotting game, in most parts of this island, but now that extra permits have been granted to trotting clubs of the North Island, one may expect to see this class of sport make rapid strides. As a- case in point, one may quote the Hawera Trotting Chib. Always a very progressive body, tbi-s club lias done much for the sport of trotting, and. incidentally, by oll'crihg good prize money, have induced owners of good class trotters and pacers to bring their horses to Hawera, and as a. result oi such energy visitors to trotting meetings held at Hawera. see pacing and trotting practically equal to that ol Addington. On Saturday next the Hawera Trotting Club will open their two-day. meeting, and, judging by the excellent acceptances and good class performers engaged, a large attendance ol the public is all that ,is now required to make this meeting one worthy of a 'club that has done much to stimulate interest in this excellent sport. Blair Audubon sho-wed a glimpse of form at the Waikato meeting, and may have a’ following if a starter for the Elthani Handicap on Saturday. Zolock Palm is a moody customer, but if induced to produce his best in the President’s Handicap at Hawera ton Saturday, would make the event interesting. Kokiritea, if reserved for this event, should command respect. iSigno-rella went a solid race on each day of the recent Wellington meeting, and, this mare can be “ticked off” as one likely to show up at the coming meeting of the Hawera Trotting Club. She may start in the E'ltham Handicap. , ' Tannhauser, which is engaged in the Auroa Maiden at Hawera bn Saturday, has a private reputation, and was solidly backed on the first day of the recent Wjellingfeon meeting. T'ahnhauser would not settle down and took no part in the contest. The pacer Calm Zolock,. appears'to be on the up grade, and gave an even display at Wanganui, which he improved' on at the recent Wellington meeting. If sent to Hawera, Calm Zolock mav prove hard to beat in the Stratford ' J ' Coledrift is well just now, and went a fine race on the' second day of the recent Wellington meeting, where he went 2.50 over 1J miles. Coledrift is handicapped to go 2.52 in the Elthajn Handicap next Saturday, so on figures has a little the best of matters. Stunt Artist paced good races at the Hutt last -week.* 'He is engaged in the principal race at the Hawera Trotting Club’s meeting, and if taken north should go wel on Saturday. Wild Nut and Spirit Bell are capable of giving good exhibitions of freegaited- trotting, and both have been showing good form in the north. Plunder, which lias a liberal start, is showing improved form this season, and should go well ° nSaturday. When going remarkably well, i'll the chief race on the second day of the late Wanganui meeting, the locallytrained Kokiritea “mixed his gait” and lost some seconds. He put in great work again over the last furlongs, hut the task was beyond him. Kokiritea may effect a surprise at the Hawera meeting When First Carbine won' the Dominion Handicap of £IOOO at Otahuhu he paced the two miles in the remarkably fast time of 4.27 3-5. As First Carbine is ’156 . yards behind in the Hawera Cup (a 4.42 limit), to be decided on Saturday, he is only handicapped to go 4.29. On these figures First. Carbine should be very hard tc heat, despite the big starts he is giving a why.
The Matanu Handicap for unhoppled trotters will provide an interesting; contest, as there are many fair performers engaged. Although giving away big starts Andes can be depended on to give a good exhibition of the square-gnited game. iHe performed well at the last Otahuhu meeting. Real Todd won well at the Mhnawntu meeting, but only went a fair race at Wanganui. The big majority of the pacers engaged in the Auroa Maiden, to be decided at the Hawera trotting meeting, have no public performances to their credit. Beatty went exceptionally well at the Htttt last week. Gold Dial went well at Wanganui, and as she
will improve she should pace a sound race. Great Kevin is another that goes well. - ; , ■Seeing that the club offered the * - splendid prize of £6OO for their Cup. it followed that a good class or horseswould be nominated, and this eventalone will be worth a pilgrimage -to witness. The scratch horse, First Carbine, is giving away 156 yards (equal to 13 seconds), but as he defeated the ? best horses in Australasia * (Man-o’-War, Onyx, Acron, Realm, Great >. Bingen, etc.) at the recent .Otahuhu meeting he must- prove hard to- beat. at Hawera. . , ■
