ONE FOR WAVERLEY. MINISTER ’S ANNOUNCEMENT. - CHRISTCHURCH, April 6. The secretary of the Racing Conference received on April 2 the following memo from the Hon. R. F. Bollard 'Minister for Internal Affairs); “Replying to your letter of the 28th ultimo. 1 have to advise you that after giving full consideration to the . dates committee’s recommendations, it has been decided to loan one day totalisator licenses not being utilised during the current racing year by the Maipsvpakfluri. "W&iapu, aimaTino and Alotueka Racing Clubs to . the Waver-, ( ey, Levin, Tanmarunui and Waipa Racing Clubs, which clubs are in need of financial assistance. I am advising the clubs accordingly. “I note the dates committee’s resolution regarding the allocation of the Cheviot and Lake County Jockey Club’s licenses. As it is too late now for the Westland Racing Club to utilise the loan this vear of the Cheviot Racing Club’s permit, it has hce-n decided to loan that ucnuit this year to the North Canterbury Racing Club. Regarding the Lake County Jockey Club’s permit, it- has been decided to grant the loan this year of one day each to the Wellington and Riverton Racing Clubs. T am advising clubs accordingly. The following reply to this memo was sent- on April 3 by the secretary of the Racing Conference ; “The president 1 acknowledges your telegrani and takes note of ytmr Ministerial decisions, overruling the recognised governing body of the turf and contravening rule 14, part 3, of the Rules of Racing.” NOTES BY MAECENAS. (By “Maecenas.”) Ridden with more vigour, several horses which filled minor places at a recent meeting would certainly have It is most- interesting to watch closely the figures'of the totalisator. they are as a barometer to the weather, and indicate how a good horse, is likely to run. Re vis was again the medium of a heavy commission for his engagement at the Manawatu meeting. He jumped out well from the harrier and looked a dividend-payer till the last lurlong, when he went all to pieces. , ! Racehorses are not in great demand just now. and the sale of young thoroughbreds at Palmerston North last week was a very poor one, although some private sales were made. The running of -Suggestion and Rereraoana of late suggests that the pan will run well iff their Auckland- engagements. This pair may divide favouritism for the Easter Handicap next 8a t-urday, ... Tamatete led for only a few strides n the Manawatu Stakes on Thursday ash, and obviously, like all of his sire s .fork, has lost his brilliancy, while still ■A comparatively young gelding. The fact that Deluge carried 9.7 and beat Tamatete at even weights is proof positive that this once great sprinter is many pounds inferior to his best, and it certainly appears as if Tamatete will want to meet weak fields il he is to win again under weight-for-age. Trainer'Stuart Wa'ddel left for Australia cn Friday last. The trip is a holiday one. but a thoroughbred qr two may be purchased by the Hawke’s Bay trainer. In his starts, both at Wellington and Manawatu meetings Standard showed plenty of pace, and the sou of Absurd will Have weak opposition at 'Wairarapa next Saturday lie will run well. As 'is usually the case, a, large uuin•ier of Taranaki-trained horses are engaged at the Feilding meeting, which opens on Saturday next. It is stated that the Wanganui 1 rotting Club are anxious to hand, over their permit of two days to the Manganui Jockey Club, providing tho Jockey 'Jluh will take over a big liability, vhich. it is stated, the trotting body shoulder. Scotch Mixture ran a very good race u the chief handicap on the second lay of the Manawatu meeting, and on this showing is certain to be fancied or his Feilding engagements. When at the post, prior to the runling of the Kair-anga Hurdles at Awainni on Thursday last. Comedy Prince r-reived a very severe kick, which opened up a big wound. . Comedy Prince bled freely, and his rider brought him back to the weighing enclosure, but after getting veterinary xiviee the stewards ordered Comedy Mince to bo raced. There is no question about Oration eing brilliant, hut on his races up to :he present it looks, doubtful il this rood-looking youngster will he anything but a “sprinter.” . It. certainly, looked as if some of the vihiiers at the Manawatu meeting v-e.rc hickv to get first place, for it was obvious that in several instances the beaten division could have done better bad their riders used a little judgment-, not to mention energy. On Saturdajr next ther-e will be rae-
lug at Auckland, Feilding, Wairarapa, Kuerten and Tuapeka. As tar as this province is concerned, most interest will be centred in the Auckland and Feilding meetings. Although the Manawatu Racing Club offered good prize money, which drew large and gosd class fields, their recentmeeting lacked the- “go” one likes t«S see at a race meeting. Possibly coming sc soon after the Wellington meeting, and being so close to Easter meetings, caused this detrimental ef:ect on the Manawatu Club.
The owner of Peneus was very anxious that Giav should go south and ride that gelding in the Easter Handicap at Riccarlon, but as Gray has many good engagements at Ellersiie he had to deeline.
R. M ac-kie rede -Re remoan a to. victory at 7.8 in the Thompson Handicap, aMd was engaged to ride The Banker at the same weight in the Autumn Handicap. When Mackie arrived at the scale he went 7.10. and Trainer Cox promptly ordered him to hand the colours to Keesing. As The Banker won, Alaokit lost a good win. As Limelight has gone wrong, and Suggestion may go to Auckland, -it looks as if that once, great, race, the Great Autumn Handicap, ol £I2OO. tc be decided at lticcarton on Enstei Monday, will only provide six or seven runners, and the' big majority of these will- be only useful handicap performers.
Trainer J. Brown had Rational verj well for his Manawatu engagements, and he began almost as quickly as of yore, but over the last part of his 'races lie was tiring. As Rational is better now than for some time past, lie might again win during Easter, providing the company is not too select, for there is no denying the fact that Rational is not as good as he once was.
After being off the scene for a considerable time, that once fine weltei pet-former Heather Sprig made anotliei attack on prize money at the last meeting at Gisborne, where he won. The gelding again won at the Poverty Bay meeting a few days later, and aftei a brieJ spell from racing was brought to Awapunr, where, after running an excellent race in the Telegrauh Handicap ell the opening day, he succeeded in winning the Stonyhurst AYelter on the second'day. Hedther Sprig may again run well at Easter time. After many unsuccessful attempts to select suitable dates, the Hamilton Racing • Club has decided on April 29 and 30 for their first autumn meeting. A first-class programme has been drawn up, the chief event of which is the Storey Cup, a handicap run over ten furlongs, and worth £6OO (including a gold' cup of £100). Owing to the steeplechase course having been ploughed recently, the club are unable to put on any steeplechase events. The programme may appeal to owners of horses in this province. That brilliant two-year-old Licinius was only produced once at the recentManawatu meeting. Starting fre-m the hopeless position of N-o. 17 a.t_ the barrier in a five furlong race, Licinius began quickly, but Oration, from a much better position, also began well, and with the big advantage of being next to the rails, in a few strides he had a four lengths lead of Licinius at the turn, but he wanted all this advantage, as Oration only won by a head.
Some of those present at Awapnni did not approve of Coinedy Prince being made to rate while suffering from the effects of a- kick. But possibly the stewards considered that backers were entitled to a run, and as the wound appeared to he only a flesh otic and not likely to trouble him till cokl>, the stewards did the best for those concerned. As events turned out-, Comedy Prince ran second, and his backers got back over 50 per cent, interest in place of losing their pound.
