TO TAKE EFFECT TOMORROW OKI)ER-.TN-001.:.VX-.T1., Residents will be interested to leam -that from to-morrow they will become inhabitants _of the Borough of Hawera. Yesterday the Town Clerk., H. S. Elliott, sent an urgent telegram to the Department of Internal Affairs inquiring as to the position of the necessary order-in-council. His message read as under:— “Nolantown merger petition please wire immediately, order-in-council is signed, as essential proceed with enrol- 1 ment, especially in view office closing Easter holidays' and last day foT enrolment April 15. Advise terms of order-in-council as early as possible.” . To this message he received a reply as follow s from the Department: ‘‘Referring to your telegram order-in-councii was passed Executive Chun-, oil to-day. It includes in borough the area recommended by the Commission. The alteration takes effect on April 1.”
This means that from to-morrow- residents of Nolantow-n will enjoy.the privileges and have responsibilities of residents of the Borough. They will still have time to have their names placed on the municipal roll, and exercise votes at the coming civic elections. Qualifications for enrolment may be any one of the following, namely, freehold, rating, residential or occupier. In the case of husband and wire, any qualification possessed by either of: them shall l>e deemed to be possessed by each'of them.
“Residential” qualification means (shortly) that a person has resided for one year in New Zealand, and in the borough during three months now lastpast, and is a British subject either by birth or by naturalisation in New Zealand. (For the purposes of this paragraph a person shall he deemed to reside in the place in which he ha s his permanent home). “Occupier’s” qualification means (shortly) that a person is, and for three months last past been in occupation, as a tenant or sub-tenant, or as one of several tenants or subtenants, of some building in the borough under a tenancy at a rent of not less than £lO a year or, as the case may lie, for each of the several tenants or sub-tenants
