LEVIN INDIGNANT.
AT NEW RAILWAY SERVICE-
WANTS STOP RESTORED
UIY TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION LEVIN, March 31
Intense indignation is felt here at the new railway service, which cuts out all towns between Wellington and Palmerston North as stopping places for the New Plymouth and Napier expresses, and subsituting feeder trains running north and south 'before the expresses, necessitating passengers from the Manawatu line changing at Palmerston North.
A crowded meeting of protest, convened by the Mayor and the Chamber of Commerce, was held last night, when strong objection was taken to the loss of privilege enjoyed for twenty years past, of ■ joining the express trains at Levin, which serves five thousand people in the vicinity, and is the connection for the Foxton district. The point was made that the speeding-up could be achieved liy cutting out small stations north of Palmerston, where the expresses stop, on an average, every 12 to 14 miles, as against the Wellington-Palmerston non-stop run of 87 miles. The objection was further taken that the .policy is penalising the country residents i'or the benefit' -if the cities.
A motion recording an emphatic protest and demanding a stop at Levin as being the largest centre on the Manawatu line, was carried with much enthusiasm. Urgent representation will be made to the Government.
