NOTES AND COMMENTS
THE RACING DESCRIBED
By Telegraph, Special to Star. WELLINGTON, March 29
The Wellington meeting was concluded under ideal'climatic .conditions and be/ore a large attendance. Speculation was brisk. Consequent on the recent dry weather, the race track was very hard but fast.* . .
Considering the prize offered (£300), the field for the Second High' Weight was disappointing. When the betting ceased, Drolatique was slightly better supported than Koval Star. From the Barrier rise, Kdnena went out as pacemaker with Royal Star in close attend, ance. This pair opened up a good, lead going down the back stretch,, and were on terms at the straight entrance. Over the last furlong Ardifinnan and Dubious joined the issue and a fine race took place. Bonena running on gamely to just beat Ardifinnan, with Dubious and Royal Star close up. The 'class was only moderately good in the Hutt Handicap, and of the runners, Glenross claimed most support, Ural la ’and Snatcher were also favoured. From at good start, Uralla, Snatcher and Koodoo were the most prominent over the first stage, then ’Uralla took charge from Koodoo and led into the straight. Once in a line for home Koodoo went to the front and looked like winning, when Glenross and Martian Miss put in great work, which ended in CJlenross -winning by a neck from Martian M iss, with Koodoo a head away. Gaze was fourth.
The scratching of The Banker re duced the Gold Cup to six? runners.. When the betting ceased the order of favouritism was Pilliewinkie, Suggestion, Surveyor, and Trcsham. When the tapes rose, the held moved off at a “snail juice,” the riders evidently all having instructions not to force the pace. Pilliewinkie pulled himself, to the lead, his closest attendants being Red Wink and Quiescent, with Surveyor bringing up the rear. There was practically no alteration of the positions over the first twelve furlongs. Half a mile from the winning post, Jones gave Pilliewinkie his head and he opened up an extra couple of lengths on his opponents, and from here till the finish, it was a case of “catch me if you can,” and after a good performance Pilliewinkie won by about four lengths from Quiescent, which hung on long enough to hold off Suggestion. Tresham was fourth and Surveyor last.
A baker’s dozen went 10 the post for the Muritai Hack. Of them Royal Form, Gauntlet and Tanadees carried the most money on the totalisator. Rich Prize began best and was followed by La Revo, Anticipate and Royal, Form, till the home run, from which point La Reve, Rich Prize and Anticipate became locked together. Anticipate on the outside “bored” badly and interfered with Rich Prize and. La Reve. Over the last furlong Gray brought Tanadees along and he won. easily from Royal Form, with Rich Prize and La Reve nest.
The Pacific Handicap brought togfcther several good youngsters, and Gold Acre, Licinus, Black Cat, Shirley and Star Area were all well supported. When the, positions, .could .be picked. Mimetic was iii front from Licinus, King’s Speech and Shirley. When the course proper was entered Licinus drew clear and looked a. certain winner, but tired badly over the last hundred vards, Mandane and Black Cat heading him off with inches between the three.
The Autumn Handicap was a great betting race, there being little difference in the figures of the leading four. Spooney, The Banker, Far North and Mountain Lion being the order. When the field had settled down on their journey, Mountain Lion, Far North and Shining. Armour were the leading trio, lollowed by Spooney and The Banker. Going up the back stretch. Far North drew out, and his immediate followers were Mountain Lion, Spooney, Clarinda and The Bunker. After passing the six fiirlong post, Clarinda and The Banker moved tip. brit the last-named was verv wide -out. Far North was just in front of Clarinda entering the straight, but when they straightened up for home Clarinda took charge, but The Banker slowly closed on her, and after a good finish won by half a length. Clarinda beat Kilfaire by one and a half lengths, with Spooner inches away. Ten useful sprinters went out for the Suburban. Handicap, the bettors supporting Inferno, King .Merv, Fool’s Paradise arid Ilka. When the positions of the leading, division could be placed, Ilka, Lucius, “Pelham, and Piquant were well placed. Ilka was the first to turn for home, but King MeiV, Fool’s Paradise and Inferno all soon challenged, and in a fine race to the post. Inferno finished best and beat Fool’s Paradise by half a length, with Ilka the same distance away. Piquant was fourth. A- day of capital racing concluded with the Belmont Hack, and in a big pool on the “tote.” , Belyis was tlm elect of the betting public, with Hall Mark, Mega la and Subjection all well supported. From what appeared to he a good start, Megulo and Tutankhamen led Bevis to the course proper. From here to the post another good race took place, Hall Mark, with a late run, just winning from Haiamis, which only beat Megalo, and Bevis was fourth.
