CHARGES AGAINST BUSINESS MAN

LONDON, March 28. A dramatic arrest occurred outside the London Bankruptcy Court. Charles Alfred Gardiner, formerly managing director for .the Gardiner Shipbuilding and Engineering Company, of Poole, Dorset, at a. salary of £IO,OOO a year, was first arrested on board his yacht at Southampton by order of the High Court for failing to appear a year ago for public examination as a director of the company above mentioned, which failed with ‘ a deficiency of £214,000. He was lodged in Brixton prison for a month and brought to the Bankruptcy Court yesterday and examined, after which the registrar granted his release. Gardiner shook, 1 hands with the warders and thanked them for their kindness, but no soorter was he outside the court than he was re-arrested by Scotland Yard detectives on a charge of obtaining a cheque for £209,000 on false pretences. Gardiner was remanded at Bow Street. He stated that he had a complete answer to the charge.
