A COSTLY LAPSE. (BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION. CHRISTCHURCH, March 26. William Hayes, a farmer, of West Melton, \vas charged before Mr. G. Cruiekshank, S.M.. with having been found in a state of intoxication while in charge of a motor-car. After hearing the evidence the magistrate said: “One has .to make an example of a man like this. He is quite a decent man, but he had a glass of beer. After that it’s much easier to accept another, and gradually lie got five beets into him.”

The sub-inspector: “There’s nothing suggested against his character.” The magistrate: “He is fined £5 and disqualified, from obtaining a driver’s license for six months from to-day. Six months is not a very long time, and he will have to use a buggy or something when he eomes in.” SONS SUED FOR MAINTENANCE. CHRISTCHURCH, March 26. A man, 86 years of age, applied in Court, to-day for maintenance orders against several of his sons. He said he had had a family of 26. A few years ago he had married again, and now had five small children dependent on him, their ages ranging from nine years down to three.

The complainant was Benjamin O’Neill, and he proceeded against his sons, George, Joseph, Benjamin, Walter Ernest, and Frederick. None of the sons appeared, but only Benjamin and Walter had been served with summonses.

After hearing evidence, the Magistrate made an order against the son Walter for' 10s a week.
