SENATE DEADLOCK.
APPOINTING MINISTER. PRESIDENT MAKES ANOTHER SELECTION. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. WASHINGTON, March 17. President Coolidge has nominated Mr John Sargent, his old personal friend and former Attoney-General of the State of Vermont, to be AttorneyGeneral in place of Mr. Charles B. Warren, whom the Senate twice rejeced. Mr. Sargent later received the Senate’s confirmation without opposition. Mr. Sargent’s nomination was sent to the Senate shortly after Mr. Coolidge had announced that Mr. Warren declined to accept the offer of a recess appointment. Senators Curtis and Robinson, the Republican and Democratic leaders, called at White House to inquiie whether the President had further business to lay before the Senate. Mr. Coolidge replied by dispatching the nomination of Mr. Sargent, thus ending the bitter controversy which has waged for the past week between himself and the Senate over Mr. Warren’s nomination. The Senate is expected to adjourn on March 18.
It is now disclosed that Mr. Coolidge definitely offered Mr. Warren a recess appointment by a letter dated March 16. Mr. Warren wrote in reply declining the offer. He said he deeply appreciated the President’s confidence, hut felt that his withdrawal would prove a public service and he beneficial both to Mr. Coolidge and to the Republican Party. The general feeling is that .the combination of circumstances prompted Mr. Coolidge to abandon the fight, first because Mr. Warren intimated that he did not wish to accept a recess appointment, and secondly, that Mr, Coolidge did not wish to insist that Air. Warren should take such an appointment. It is indicated at White House that the President believed that Air. Warren would have accepted, had he insisted on his doing so. Now the smoke of battle has cleared away it is evident that the Senate has won a decisive victory over Air. Coolidge, who sustained ‘.his first defeat since assuming office as President.
