RIVERLEA.

PROPOSED TENNIS CLUB

AN ENTHUSIASTIC MEETING

That a well-supported tennis club will be established at Riverlea. in. the near future was indicated by the general opinion expressed during a representative meeting of locaj residents held in the hall on Friday evening at the instigation of Messrs M. Malone, J. Gibson, A. Barton, and A. E. Mills, to consider the proposaL to form a club. £>pe axing as one of the convenors of the meeting^ - Mr. Mills, who was voted to the chair, said it had been suggested that the meeting should fully investigate the possibilities of securing, suitable grounds, the approximate expenditure entailed in the preparation of courts, and the support likely to be forthcoming, upon which conditions any action relating to the formation of a cLub would depend. The main obstacle —the provision of a suitable site —should not offer serious difficulty, as Mr. J. Malone had kindly ottered, if a club were formed, to allow gratis the use of a centrally situated piece of ground sufficient for requirements. The decision to adopt or reject .the proposal to form a club would, therefore, apparently depend upon whether a member ? ship sufficiently strong to justify the expenditure in preparing the court, or courts, would be secured, and judging by the interest evinced in the meeting there would be ample support. ’ . dr. J. Gibson was elected hon. secretary to the meeting. Mr. J. Malone confirmed the statement regarding liis offer, and Mr. A. Gargan also said he was prepare'd to provide a site. ' , As the site offered by Mr. Malone was considered to be the more conveniently located a resolution was passed recommending its acceptance. To guard against difficulties which might arise through the property changing hands, Mr. M. Voullaire considered that some form of tenure should be arranged, and suggested a “peppercorn’’ rental with the right of purchase.

Mr. Malone said that as long as lie remained on the property the ground would be available, but' to provide for the contingency suggested he would cede the land by deed of gift to the tennis club. Votes of thanks were accorded both Messrs Malone and Gargan, and a further resolution that Mr. Malone be elected to life membership was carried unanimously.

A lengthy discussion took place regarding the class of court to be put down and the provision of materials, etc. In conclusion a committee consisting of Alessrs Alills, Gibson, J. Ala lone, A. Shaw, and B. Webby was appointed to instigate full inquiries and report to *a later meeting^
