NOTES ON THE GAME. (By Telegraph.—Special to Star). WELLINGTON, March 9. Wellington gained a most meritorious ivin to-dav against Victoria. At the beginning* of the day’s play one could not be sanguine as to the local score reaching respectable dimensions. However, Henderson and Brice played pluckily, putting on over fifty runs for the last wicket. The former’s thirty was quite well played. The ball was watched well and some good strokes were shown. The visitors’ bowling was disappointing, and only Liddicut. showed c-onsisten form. Hartkopf did not strike length, and the ball did not nip off the pitch. Wellington’s second innings total of 217 was quite a good performance, being a credit to the younger members of the side. Victoria, with 237 to get, began at L2 o’clock, finishing soon after five. The batting was quite disappointing, lacking enterprise and also shelving breaking balls. Woodful was easily the best, his fifty being the result of a. capital innings, not by many strokes, but by playing very surely. He was taken at short leg from the first chancd. E. Austen showed up the best of the others. He is a nice free batsman. Hartkopf played quietly, scoring runs by drives to the off, and was dissatisfied with the leg-before decision. The questioning of decisions was the most unsatisfactory feature of the Victorian. Wellington’s bowling showed eery good length and a little work on the hall. Badcock’s work was of a high order and deserved success. He was orobahlv the best bowler in the game. Brice also was in good form, and kept the batsmen quiet the whole time. The fielding was patchy. but . catches by Badcock and Hiddleston were quite brilliant. The wicket-keeping was of the poorest description. Ellis had an injured hand. v N.Z. TEST TEAM. CHRISTCHURCH, March 9. The following have been chosen to represent New Zealand against the Victorians in the first test match:— Worker, Dickenson, Alloo (Otago); Blunt, Mcßetli, Patrick-(Canterbury); Hiddleston, Dempster,-Collins, McGirr (Wellington); Dncre, Rountree (Auckland).
