FALSE PRETENCES ALLEGED.

TWO WOMEN CHARGED. At the Magistrate Cour- at Stratford yesterday two married women were charged with raise pretences. Air H. L. Spi att appeared for one of the accused, wno came from Haavera, and the other was. not defended. Tlotn pleaded guilty. Detective-Sergeant J. .Cooney prosecuted, and said, that on January 15, one of the defendants wias staying at Hawera. with the other. They visited Stratford and made up their mint Us to obtain .some goods, so they used a public telephone, and rang Mr. White ordering good*! in the name of a Stratford lady. The goods Avere afterwards obtained and taken to , Hawera. On arrival there they found they had too .much, and so part of the! haul was returned to Air. White by post. Since they had been summoned a. postal note for 30s had been forwarded to Mr. White, and the sawn of £1 had been sent to Mr. Brown. Some of the goods had been recovered, but the .amounts still owing were lls 9d to Air. Alclnnes and £4 6s 2d to Air. White. Both vomen avere married and had children. The circnmsitance® under which the offences were committed were such that probably the Bench would give full consideration to them. Both avere married women living apart from their husbands. One had six children and could hot' get a shilling from her husband and the other was n,ow working as housekeeper. The method _ adopted had been most -systematic, however. Nothing avas previously knoovn against them.

Mr. Spratb, on behalf of his client, referred to the excellent character she bad home, and urged __ that the circumstances aa-arranted the' granting of probation. The Magistrate admitted the women to probation for six months on condition that they must not associate with each ' other. One was ordered to pay lls 9d restitution, and the publication of their names was forbidden.
