SINGAPORE BASE.
FLOAT ING DOCK TO BE PROVIDED. ■ BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. LONDON, March 6. A section of the press which has hitherto wholly favoured the Singapore naval, base scheme ie at -present fsTio\vin££ *i» disposition to contend that a floating dock would suffice. The Australian Press Association was authoritatively informed, that the Admiralty lias already decided on the prompt installation of a floating dock capable of accommodating the largest battleship likely to be engaged in the Pacific. The dock is to be towed out in three sections., the first of which has reached Malta, while the others will shortly follow'. This provision does not imply a modification of the original plans, which, are going on, uninterruptedly. A graving dock will be built later if required. Opponents contend that the base will cast £20,000,000, which is considered most extravagant. Another interesting decision is that the Singapore garrison will consist exclusively of white troops.
