One candidate was presented for initiation. A transfer for Mr Wallace, late of Gisborne, was received and accepted. The lodge’s delegate reported on Dispensary Board meeting, the report being received. P.G. Bro. Latham was appointed future delegate to Dispensary Board. FJ. Ansell, of the Otago Motor Club, during an address at the Southland Motor Association smoke concert. “I had occasion some months ago to motor a City Councillor through the streets of Dunedin,” continued the speaker, “and afterwards he told me that he never knew there were so many <1 fools in Dunedin.” Oftimes of late the unusual and the unexpected has made its appearance at Ohnwe beach, and a couple of days ago the troubles of the little township were, further added to by the arrival on the tide of the putrid carcase of a. hull, which was left high and dry on. the sands just opposite-, the bathing shed. The unwelcome visitor, though incapable of fight, was unapproachable ; so much so that the seaside committee, usually so energetic in the interests- of the residents, was at a loss to know how to .act , and consequently the carcase wa.s left in .undisputed possession, for the time being, of the- sands. The licensing of drivers as provided for under the new motor regulations, has commenced in. Hawera, the County Council having issued their first license on Monday last. However, taking into consideration the great number of persons in the oirtrici who drive cars, and the fact that after April 1 drivers’ licenses must, be produced, on demand, the total of about fortv nipplications so far made is surprisingly small. ’ Perhaps when the- Borough Council commence issuing. licenses on Monday. and people begin to realise that the time allowed is passing, they will give the matter more serious consideration.
