TOLL=GATES.
APPEAL FOR ABOLITION. “That all toll-gates should he abolished as at March/31,” was the- text of 3. remit brought, before the half-yearly meeting of the North Island Motor Union, held at Napier, by the. South Taranaki Automobile Association. “This is a very vital question to us,’’ stated Air. E. P. Cox (South Taranaki), “and I do- not know whether the people on thi s side- of the island realise hon important it is. Our protest is being based on the principle that we are non being taxed annually toward the upkeep of roads, and do not want to pay this super-tax. Not one of the loom bodies that- have toll-gates want to retain them. If pressure is brought 40 bear on the Government- by this union -it will greatly help the Taranaki dis trict. Where the Alain Highways Board has taken over the roads the toll-gates certainly should go out:” Dr. E. E. Porritt seconded the remit on behalf of the Wanganui Automobile Association.
Air. 11. J. Stott (Wellington) pointed out that Air. Furkert, chairman of the Alain Highways Board, was absolutely in sympathy with the abolition of all toll gates. The board’s recommendation had gone on to the Afmister, and the matter was now in his hands. He suggested that South Taranaki should add to their remit the words: “If compensation is i-equired by certain councils the Alain Highways Board should be asked to pay an agreed amount from the general fund.” Air. Cox , agreed to the addition being made to the remit, which on being put to the meeting was carried unanimously.
