MOTORCYCLE RACES

SPEED ON HAWERA TRACK. . JONES WINS BIG RACE. The motor cvele race meeting held on the Hawera. Racecourse yesterday by the Ha.wera Motor Cycle Club was the most successful in the club's histqyy. Altogether 2500 people paid for admission, and receipts from the gates and the sale of programmes amounted to £363. The meeting passed off most enjoyable, the public being treated to many thrilling exhibitions of speed, and the day not being marred by any accidents. P. Coleman, the crack Harlev-Davidson rider, put up the creditably- time of 481 see. for a mile and nine yards, while throughout all his races he was consistently lapping under 50sec. Moller, on a 31 Norton, attained the creditable pace of a mile and nine yards in 54sec., this time being registered in the race which he won. During the day recognition of the prowess of these two riders in recently establishing world grass track records at Auckland was made, Coleman being presented with a certificate for the world’s record five miles, and Moller with a certificate for the flying mile record for a middleweight. machine.

During an interval in the. programme the public, were treated with an exhibition mile time contest between Rowe, Moller and Herbert. Herbert was the winner by 4-fisee, the respective times being: Herbert 53 4-ssec, Moller 54 3-ssec, Rowe 56 l-ssee. _ Prior to the commencement of the races a meeting of members of the A.C.U. was held to finally decide the position of Stratton, who was dis qualified at the New Plymouth meet ing. The result was that Stratton, was reinstated and subsequently rode in several of the. races.

East night an enjoyable smoke concert was held, at which the competitors and visitors were entertained. The function passed off most successfully, and the, following toasts were honoured; “The King,” “Visitors and Competitors,” “Egmont Racing Club.” “Kindred Sports,” “The Ladies,” “N.Z.A.C.U.,” “Ha.wera Motor Cycle Club,” and “The Press.” During the evening a musical programme was ren derod by Messrs B. In the seventh lap the scratch men began to get close to the leaders, the order past the box at the end of the seven^miles being•Roberts. Champion, Alelville, Coleman Moller. Rowe and McCready. Southward here dropped out. W hen eight laps had been covered the order of the leading trio remained the same, but Jones liad run into fourth place, with Rowe next, followed by Coleman. Aftei nine miles the order was Roberts, Champion and Jones, with Coleman in fourth berth coming fast a quarter of ■a mile behind. After ten miles had been covered Roberts still led, followed closely by Jones and Champion. In the last lap Roberts was overhauled by •Tones, Champion and Coleman, Jones going on to win by 100 yards from Champion, with Coleman finishing fast about 25 vards further hack. Moller, who in the previous race had broken an air cable, again met with hard luck by breaking his chain, and thus having to drop out of the picture.
