GRAND THEATRE—TO-NIGHT “BABY PEGGY.’’ "Captain January” is one of those films which tell a simple story clearly and beautifully and awaken gentle emotions and kindly feelings. There is plenty of “human interest*’ in this tale of a waif of the sea and her gruff old guardian, the keeppr of the little light house on the Maine coast. Her story is one, of the oldest sto. ies in the world and one of the best. Even the nappy ending seems inevitable “Captain January’’ is a delightful screen story for young folks and old. It will be seen at the Grand Theatre to-night, siinnorted by a Mack Sennett comedy entitled “Flip Flops.”
WILLIAM HEUGHAN. THE ACTOR SINGER. It is indeed but seldom that an artist combines vocal ability of tbe very highest order with powers of dramati: art, but in William Heughan, the world-famed basso' cantante, we have one who undoubtedly' does so. It lias been a revelation .to concert-goers throughout the world to find the new ov and life he gives to his numbers. To this artist gone, are the stiff and formal conventions of tbe concert plat!orm, conventions which left the audi- * nee weary and longing for a something their songs meant to them, blit had never before been given. With bis great vocal ability and dramatic talent he makes vivid, thrillingly vivid at times, alt that lies at the root of his songs. This is well summed up by tlie Sydney Morning Herald in the words, “He is indeed 1 an actor singer of remarkable powers.” We cannot do better than quote the words of the Melbourne Argus: “No lover of music can afford to miss seeing and hearing this great artist.” He is giving a concert in the Opera House on Friday, 27th inst.. when he will be ably assisted by’ the brilliant young violinist Hymn Lenzer, who, in the opinion of the public and critics alike, is the finest violinist Australia has yet produced; and also by Gladys Sayer, from the Brussels Cohservntoire,* and who received her early tuition under the great Hambonrg. i Box plans are at Everybody’s Sweet Store, ’phone 639.
