NOTES ON THE RACING
(Rv Telegraph.—Special to Star.)
WANGANUI, Feb. 21
A lot of rain had fallen in Wanganui since Thursday’s racing, but this was of benefit to the track, and today’s sport was held under ideal climatic conditions. The attendance was very large, but owing to one dividend .fields in two of tlie races the totalizator figures showed a slight decline, but were up just on £2OOO as compared with the autumn meeting last year. Of" a dozen runners for the Okoia Hack Handicap. Passionate was selected as extra good by the betting public, and duly won after having had anything but'a good run. Over the early stages Glengadiff led from Drolatique, but after going half a mile Drolatique took charge and led a bunched lot into the' straight. Over the last half-furlong Grav brought Passionate along with a good run. and he won nicely from Shinrug Armour, with Knighthood, Arsene Lupin, and Sanctuary next. Bright Day was a better favourite than Siaosi tor the Autumn Handicap. Siaosi was taken to the front from the barrier rise and led till well into the straight. Here Glenross tackled the leader, but had t<> do his best- to hold off Bright Day, which got within half a, length of Glenross after having a shockingly had run. Siaosi was' close up. , The bracketed pair Tamatete and Tukia. carried over £18(50 in the .lackson Stakes, while Motley and Lady Cavendish were comparatively .neglected. From a good start Tamatete was first to break the lino from Lady Cavendish and Tukia, while Motley 'lost., three lengths in the, first, hallfurlong. At' the. five-furlong post Tamtitete.. came across rather quickly on to the rails and interfered, with Lady Cavendish, the incident costing the filly about three lengths. At the hallmile post Tamatete led Tukia by a length, with Lady Cavendish and Motley closing up again. There apperaed to" be some careless riding, and at the home t\irn Tamatete still led his stablemate. Once in line for home, Tukia closed on Tamatete, and Lady Cavendish also moved up from the inside. A chain from the post Tamatete came out-, and Jones drove Lady Cavendish through, to win by half a head. Wench was made' a level money favourite for the hurdles, hut was very badly ridden, and over the last furlong had "nothing in reserve to hold off the light weight. Sling Camp. The Harrison Two-year-old Handicap produced a. good betting race, Black Cat being made favourite, hut Ohui and Dal Eaton each came in for good support. When the barrier rose Lin Arlington was the quickest out, hut Dal Eeaton and Black Cat immediately headed him /and had the race to themselves, Black Cat drawing out over the last furlong to beat Dal Eaton decisively. Anklet just beat Star Area, which was unlucky. Stock was a big favourite for the Earle Stakes, Musketoon and Surveyor being next in order of favouritism. This”race was a most unsatisfactory one. the ' first half-mile taking GO seconds, the full distance also being shockingly slow. Under such, conditions the brilliant Surveyor was well suited, and taking the lead from Kilfairq and ■Spooney half a. furlong from ■ the post, lie won nicely, Killaire just heating Spoonev. On the strength of his good showing on Thursday, Euphonium was entrusted with just over £I7OO in the Mataraw a. Hack Handicap, with Sunn.s Yale and Blue Peter the best supported of the other starters. When the field settled down Euphonium was in charge from Lipsol. but. the lastnamed went to the front on entering the straight and won cleverly. A successful mooting concluded with the. Farewolj Handicap, and in a big "pool’.’ Civility, Deluge, Gaillard. and Inferno were backed in that order. As usual. The Lamb soon hit the trout from Deluge and Shut Eye. Approaching the half-mile post Civility ran into second place, and was just behind Tim Lamb as they swung into the straight. Over the last furlong Civility ran on well to win, and The Lamb just held off Inferno. CANTER BU BY MEETING. SATURDAY’S RESULTS. CHRISTCHURCH, Feh. 22.
